The Woodcutter and Ganeshji : God's sense of humor

Tale Bearer : Papa/Aaji

There was once a poor woodcutter who used to go to the forest to cut trees, then sold the wood to buy food for his family. Near his house there was a big mansion in which lived a rich zamindar (landowner/farmer) who did nothing to help his neighbor. Once the woodcutter while cutting wood went deep into the forest, he found his way to a Ganeshji temple, something happened and he thought -"I am hungry, it would be great if I put my hand on Ganeshji's tond (belly) and I get a laddoo."

So he put his hand on the belly and said - "Tond main haath, haath main laddoo" "Hand over belly, laddoo in hand" and lo behold! he got a ladoo. It was a delicious laddoo it was soft, filled with dry-fruits made of pure ghee. He ate as much as he could, he couldn't finish it, so he tied it up in a cloth and got it home for his family. Everybody ate it and when they had their fill the laddoo vanished. The woodcutter's money that he had got home from selling wood was saved, so he was very happy. This went on for a few days. The neighbor's wife noticed these proceedings and was very curious. The woodcutter's family which was always sad and  hungry waiting for food, now seemed well-fed and happy. She asked the woodcutter's wife, who being a simple lady told her about the Ganesha temple in the forest from where her husband got a laddoo for the family to eat. The zamindar's wife told this to her husband. So the next day he followed the woodcutter into the forest, after a day of seeing him cutting and collecting wood he watched him go into the temple where the woodcutter placed his hand on Ganeshji's belly and said -"Tond main haath, haath main laddoo""Hand over belly, laddoo in hand". The zamindar thought "This is the way to do it". He waited till the woodcutter had left and then we went up to the idol placed his hand on the idol's belly and said -"Tond main haath, haath main laddoo""Hand over belly, laddoo in hand" but oh what is this? his hand got stuck. He tried pulling away with all his might but he couldn't pull it away. Now his wife was waiting for him, when he didn't return for long she took with her two-three servants and reached the temple. They tried pulling him away with all their might, they too got stuck, police officers who came to help got stuck, in this way the entire village got stuck one after the other. Everybody thought -"Oh what trouble is this, the entire village is here". Then the woodcutter came to know and went to the temple and asked God -"Prabhu (Lord) I used to put my hand here everyday and get a laddoo, why are these people getting stuck one behind another?" Ganeshji replied -"The zamindar had so much money, he never helped his neighbor, he made merry alone, and when I gave the poor man a laddoo to eat, he was so greedy he came to take it for himself. I have punished him for it" The woodcutter said -"Maharaj!(Great King) please let him go" So Ganeshji said -"Let him divide his possessions in half and give to the woodcutter who need not cut wood any more" the zamindar agreed and everybody went home, the woodcutter through Ganeshji's blessing lived happily ever after.

"Jaise lakadhaare ke din bahure, waise Ganeshji hamare bhi din bahure"
"Just like the woodcutter's days became better, let Ganeshji make our days better too"
